Why are we trying to measure our impact? While it is clear that our motivation is primarily personal, we aim at participating and contributing along the way to the countries we visit and people we meet.
Some may say that traveling and meeting different people and cultures is positive, and is an important source of revenue for certain countries. Others may say that in fact, travelling has a large negative impact when considering the pollution and waste generated.
The truth probably lies somewhere in between - and we want to try to capture it.
Everything we do has an impact, regardless of our location, be it the UK, France or Sri Lanka. Understanding one's impact is a first step to manage it. In our case, we want to minimize our negative impact (and offset it where impossible to avoid) and maximize our positive footprint.
Knowledge is power. And it does not need to be complicated, as we attempt to show here, for fellow travelers to replicate. Details on the methodologies used and findings below. We welcome your comments and feedback to improve our approach, and contact us if you wish to test our forthcoming tool on impact measurement!
Download our responsible tourism tool
We built an excel-based tool that allows us and users to evaluate the positive and negative environmental and socio-economic impact of their travels using a data-driven approach. Try it, it is free of use!
View our results
How much greenhouse gas did our transports emit? How much plastic did we save by using a reusable water filter bottle? How did our money contributed to support the local economy? See the results to these questions and more here.
Read our stories
We believe in data. However, data is not everything. Some aspects of responsible tourism are hard to capture quantitatively. Yes, hitchhiking saves carbon emissions, but does it contribute economically and socially? We complement our tool with stories from the road, where we discuss these "grey zones".
